?

2017 será melhor!

  • As the rains begin to be heavy, residents in some areas within the metropolis, and commercial tricycle (Keke) operators in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State are crying to the state government
to take urgent steps and fix roads in the city which are in terrible bad conditions.

Some of the affected persons that spoke with the Edge News lamented that conditions of the
roads were getting worst by the day following the impact of rainfall.

Emem Uwah, a resident on Udoh street complained that the entire
stretch of the road linking his street to other streets like Effiong Udo Akpan, Asutan, Ebong , Eka, and Bassey Attah
was in a terrible condition. He regretted that if the situation was allowed to
continue without immediate attention by the government, the area would cut be off from the rest of
the city. Another sore situation according to him is the menace of flood in the area.

A keke rider, Moses Essien did not hide his anger with
the development, he urged the state owned
road maintenance to urgently fix roads in the state capital.

“I can’t understand what is happening in our state, they collect ticket from us, everyday, N200, and yet no road, abeg, help me tell the government to come and do the road”, Essien said.

Officials of the state road maintenance agency weren’t willing to make comments on the development.

As at when the Edge News visited the agency’s work yard located on the outskirts
of the city, the compound was under lock and keys without any sign of activities.

The Edge News reports that in the first term of the immediate past state governor,
Senator Godswill Akpabio, a “quick fix” programme called “operation zero pothole”
which was launched with fanfare to offer remedial solutions to urban roads died with the administration.

The Edge News findings reveal that the state road maintenance agency was yet to have a
management team following the dissolution of all boards of state owned corporations by the present
administration. Among roads in the state capital that need urgent government attention are, Nsentip Street,
Ukana offot, Okokon Etuk, Eka, Udo, Udi, Effiong Udo Akpan, Asutan, Udoette,
Udo Ekong, Urua Ekpa, and the recently renamed Mary Slessor street.
